If you swing a hammer, run wire, or pour concrete for a living in Western New York, your insurance needs look nothing like a typical office. You are on job sites, in customers’ homes, and on the road with a loaded truck, often all in the same day. Here is the coverage most contractors and trades need, and why having it on paper matters as much as having it at all.
The core coverages for a contractor
- General Liability. This is the foundation. It covers third-party bodily injury and property damage, like a passerby hurt near your site or damage to a client’s home during the work. It is also the certificate almost every general contractor and property owner will demand before you start.
- Workers’ Compensation. Required in New York the moment you have employees, and often a factor with subcontractors too. It covers medical bills and lost wages when a crew member is hurt.
- Commercial Auto. Your personal policy will not cover a truck used for work. Commercial auto protects the vehicles and trailers you use to haul crew, tools, and materials.
- Tools and Equipment (Inland Marine). The gear that gets stolen off a truck or damaged on a site is often not fully covered by a standard policy. This fills that gap.
- Umbrella / Excess Liability. Adds a layer above your other policies for the larger claim or lawsuit that could otherwise sink the business.
Smaller outfits often start with a contractor’s Business Owners Policy that bundles liability and property, then add the rest as they grow.
The certificate is your ticket to the job
Here is something every contractor learns fast: the coverage only helps you win work if you can prove it. General contractors, municipalities, and commercial clients will ask for a certificate of insurance, sometimes with specific limits and an “additional insured” endorsement, before they let you on site.
When that request comes in and the job is waiting, you need an agent who can turn the certificate around quickly and get it right. That is the kind of thing we handle the same business day for our clients.
Built for how WNY contractors actually work
Lake-effect winters, outdoor work that stalls in the cold, salt and rust, and tight bid timelines are all part of the job here. As an independent, local agency since 1952, we shop your coverage across many carriers, including The Hartford, and build it around the trade you actually do.
See more on our contractors and trades page, or request a consultation and we will put it together with you.
